Why is my refrigerator not cooling?

A refrigerator that runs but stays warm usually has a failed evaporator fan, a defrost problem that has iced over the coil, or a compressor that is not starting. Each has a different fix at a very different price.

Fridge warm, freezer fine. Almost always airflow: the evaporator fan has quit, the damper is stuck, or the defrost system has failed and the coil is a block of ice. Our article on a refrigerator not cooling but the freezer works covers the details.

Both sections warm, compressor humming then clicking. That click is the overload on the compressor start relay. Sometimes the relay is bad, which is inexpensive. Sometimes the compressor windings are failing, which is not.

Freezer frosting up, back wall covered in ice. The defrost heater, defrost thermostat or defrost timer has stopped the automatic cycle, and ice builds until air cannot pass through the coil.

Water under the crisper drawers or on the floor. A clogged defrost drain tube, a cracked drain pan, or a leaking water inlet valve on models with dispensers.

Runs constantly and never shuts off. Dirty condenser coils, a failed condenser fan motor, or a worn door gasket letting warm air in. In a Sacramento garage in August, a dead condenser fan will cook a compressor within days.

Ice maker and water dispenser dead, everything else fine. Usually the inlet valve or ice maker module, handled under our ice maker repair service on the same visit.

Food freezing in the fridge section. A failed thermistor, a stuck damper, or a control board misreading the sensor.

What the visit costs

The diagnostic fee is $99, and we waive it when you approve the repair. A second appliance checked on the same visit is $25 more.

You get a firm price before any part is installed. Decline it and you owe the $99 and nothing else. Typical part-by-part ranges are in our refrigerator repair cost guide for Sacramento.

Refrigerator brands we work on

The daily bread of refrigerator work is Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, Kenmore, Maytag and Amana. Samsung and LG French-door models keep us especially busy with ice maker and defrost issues; see our Samsung refrigerator repair and LG refrigerator repair pages for their error codes. For the built-in tier common in newer Roseville and Folsom kitchens we repair Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking, KitchenAid, JennAir, Bosch and Electrolux, including column and panel-ready units where the pull-out is half the job. Under-counter units fall under our wine cooler repair service.

How a refrigerator repair visit works

  1. You call, we schedule. Tell us the brand, the symptom, and where the unit sits. Same-day appointments are often available on weekdays.
  2. Diagnosis on site. The technician checks temperatures in both sections, listens to the compressor and fans, inspects the coil for ice, and tests the relay, thermistor and board as needed. Usually 20 to 40 minutes.
  3. Firm quote before work starts. Approve it and the $99 diagnostic comes off the bill.
  4. Repair and verification. Fans, relays, thermistors and defrost parts are often on the van. We confirm the unit is pulling down to temperature before leaving.

Repair or replace a refrigerator?

Repair a refrigerator under 10 years old whenever the quote is less than half the cost of a comparable new unit. Past 12 to 15 years, or when the sealed system has failed on a budget model, replacement is usually the better spend.

A fan, relay or defrost heater on an eight-year-old fridge is almost always worth doing. A sealed-system repair on a 14-year-old top-freezer is not. Built-ins flip that math: a Sub-Zero or Thermador costs enough new that a major repair at year 15 can still be right. Our technician is EPA 608 Certified, so refrigerant work is done properly when it is worth doing.

Where we repair refrigerators

Expert Repair Company is based at 7906 Arcade Lake Lane in Citrus Heights, CA and covers Roseville, Folsom, Orangevale, Fair Oaks and Carmichael on regular routes, with Rancho Cordova, Antelope, North Highlands, Rocklin and Sacramento also served.

Citrus Heights is home base. Roseville and Folsom bring the built-in and counter-depth units; the 1970s neighborhoods of Fair Oaks, Carmichael and Orangevale bring garage refrigerators and second freezers.

Garage refrigerators and Sacramento summer heat

Most residential refrigerators are rated for ambient temperatures up to about 100°F, and Sacramento garages blow past that for weeks every summer. Any coil dust or weak start relay becomes a failure. If your garage fridge quit during a heat wave, do not assume it is dead; a relay, a condenser fan or a coil cleaning brings many of them back.

Frequently asked questions

Should I unplug a refrigerator that is not cooling?

If the freezer wall is iced over, yes. Unplug it, open the doors, and let it thaw for 24 hours; if cooling returns, the defrost system is the problem. If there is no ice and the compressor is hot or clicking, leave it plugged in and call. Move food to a cooler either way.

How long does a refrigerator repair take?

Most repairs are finished in one visit of 45 to 90 minutes when the part is on the van. Fans, relays, thermistors, defrost heaters and gaskets usually are. Control boards and brand-specific parts may need ordering, and we return as soon as they arrive.

Do you fix Samsung and LG refrigerators?

Yes. Samsung and LG French-door and side-by-side models are the most common refrigerators we see in Citrus Heights and Roseville. Ice maker freeze-ups, evaporator fan noise, defrost failures and compressor issues are the usual calls, and we stock the parts those brands go through most.

Is it worth repairing a 10-year-old refrigerator?

Usually, if the repair is a fan, relay, thermostat, defrost part, gasket or ice maker. A compressor or sealed-system failure on a 10-year-old budget refrigerator is often not worth it, while the same failure on a built-in Sub-Zero or Thermador generally is.

Do you repair freezers and garage refrigerators?

Yes. Upright freezers, chest freezers and second refrigerators in garages are a large share of our summer work in the Sacramento area. Many fail from heat and dust rather than age, and a condenser fan, relay or coil cleaning gets them running again.

Can you repair a built-in or counter-depth refrigerator?

Yes. We service Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking, KitchenAid and JennAir built-ins, including column units and panel-ready doors. Access is the hard part, so tell us the model when you call and we will plan for the pull-out. Expert Repair Company is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
