Quick answer: An LG refrigerator that is warm in both sections while the lights and display still work often has a problem with its linear compressor or the board that drives it. A fridge warm with a cold freezer points to an iced evaporator fan or a defrost fault. Codes such as Er FF, Er IF, Er dH and Er CO name the part. Expert Repair Company repairs LG French door, side-by-side, InstaView, Door-in-Door and Craft Ice refrigerators across the Sacramento area from our base in Citrus Heights, CA. LG refrigerators have a few well-known weak points, and the diagnosis starts with them. Call (279) 225-1050, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

LG linear compressor problems

Many LG refrigerators built over the last decade use a linear compressor, which runs a piston back and forth with magnets instead of a crankshaft. It is quiet and efficient when it works. When it fails, the typical sign is a refrigerator that slowly loses cooling in both sections over several days while the lights, display and fans all keep running.

Not every warm LG has a failed compressor. A failed inverter or main board, a condenser fan that has stopped, or coils packed with dust produce the same complaint. Telling them apart takes temperature readings, a check of the board output and, when the sealed system is involved, refrigerant work that requires EPA 608 certification. Our technician holds it. If the compressor itself has failed, check your paperwork first: LG has offered longer coverage on the compressor than on the rest of the refrigerator on many models, and we will tell you if your repair looks like a warranty claim.

Fridge warm, freezer cold

On LG French door models, a warm fresh-food section with a working freezer usually means the evaporator in the freezer has iced over and the fan can no longer push cold air up through the duct to the fridge. The fan may grind against the ice before it stops. The cause is a defrost heater, a defrost sensor or a frozen drain, and clearing the ice by hand is only a temporary fix.

LG ice maker freezing and slow ice

LG French door and InstaView models with an in-door ice maker can frost up when warm, humid air reaches the ice compartment, for example through a worn ice compartment seal or a door left ajar. Ice clumps in the bucket, the auger jams, or the ice maker stops making ice. Craft Ice models make round ice slowly by design; a sudden drop in output is the sign of a fault, not the normal pace.

LG refrigerator error codes

On most LG models you see the code as Er followed by two letters:

  • Er FF. Freezer fan error: the fan is iced in or has failed.
  • Er IF. Ice maker fan error: frost in the ice compartment or a failed fan.
  • Er dH. Defrost heater error: the defrost system did not complete its cycle.
  • Er CO. Communication error between the main board and the display.
  • Er rS. Fresh-food temperature sensor fault.
  • Er CF. Condenser fan error: the fan by the compressor has stopped, which overheats the system.

Other LG refrigerator repairs

  • Knocking or clicking from the bottom back. A linear compressor working hard, a condenser fan blade hitting something, or ice on the freezer fan.
  • Water dispenser slow or dead. A clogged filter, a frozen water line in the door, or a failed inlet valve.
  • Water pooling under the crisper drawers. A frozen or clogged defrost drain.
  • Display dark, nothing running. A failed main board or a power supply fault on the board.

Repair or replace an LG refrigerator?

Fan, defrost, ice maker, sensor and board repairs on an LG under about 10 years old are usually worth doing. A sealed-system or compressor repair out of warranty on an older unit is where we sit down with the numbers and give you an honest answer. Typical ranges are in our refrigerator repair cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my LG linear compressor has failed?

The classic pattern is both sections slowly warming over several days while the lights, display and fans keep working. A failed inverter board, a stopped condenser fan or dirty coils can look the same, so it takes a diagnosis to be sure before any sealed-system work is quoted.

Is the LG compressor still under warranty?

LG has offered longer coverage on the compressor than on the rest of the refrigerator on many models. Find your purchase date and model number, and check your warranty paperwork or LG directly. If the diagnosis points to the compressor, we will tell you so you can make the claim.

What does Er FF mean on an LG refrigerator?

Er FF is a freezer fan error. Usually the freezer evaporator has iced over and the fan blade is frozen in place, which also leaves the fresh-food section warm. The underlying cause is normally a defrost fault.

Why is my LG ice maker making less ice?

Frost in the ice compartment, a clogged water filter, low water pressure or a failing fill valve are the common causes. On Craft Ice models output is slow by design, so compare against what it made when it was working well.
