Quick answer: Most Samsung refrigerator calls come down to ice: an ice maker in the fresh-food door that freezes solid, or an evaporator fan that ices over and stops moving air, leaving the fridge warm while the freezer still freezes. Codes such as 21E, 22E, 33E and 39E point to fans, the ice route heater and the ice maker. Expert Repair Company: $99 diagnostic, waived with repair, (279) 225-1050.

Expert Repair Company repairs Samsung French door, side-by-side, four-door Flex and Family Hub refrigerators across the Sacramento area from our base in Citrus Heights, CA. Samsung refrigerators have their own failure patterns, and knowing them shortens the diagnosis. Call (279) 225-1050, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The Samsung ice maker problem

On most Samsung French door models the ice maker lives in a small compartment inside the fresh-food door, a long way from the freezer. Cold air is ducted to it, and a fan and heaters keep it from frosting over. When moisture gets into that compartment, frost builds on the ice maker, the fan and the chute until ice stops dropping, the bucket fuses into a block, or water drips onto the floor in front of the door.

The usual causes are a door gasket on the ice compartment that no longer seals, a failed ice room fan, a failed fill tube or ice route heater, or a drain path that has frozen. Defrosting the compartment with a hair dryer clears it for a week or two; it does not fix the cause. The repair is to find which part is letting the frost form and replace it.

Fridge warm, freezer still cold

Samsung refrigerators with twin cooling have a separate evaporator for the fresh-food section. When that evaporator does not defrost properly, ice builds on the coil and around the fan blade until the fan stalls. You may hear a fan scraping or a ticking noise from the back wall before the fridge warms up, and you may see a fan error on the display.

The cause is usually a defrost heater, a defrost sensor or a drain that refreezes and backs ice up into the fan. Clearing the ice without fixing the defrost fault buys a few weeks at most.

Samsung refrigerator error codes

Samsung codes vary by model, but these are the ones that show up most:

  • 21E or 21C. Freezer fan error: the fan is iced in or has failed.
  • 22E or 22C. Fresh-food fan error: the twin-cooling evaporator has iced over, the most common cause of a warm fridge with a working freezer.
  • 33E. Ice route or fill tube heater error: frost or ice is building in the ice maker path.
  • 39E. Ice maker function error: the ice maker cannot complete its cycle.
  • 5E. Fresh-food defrost sensor fault.
  • PC ER. Communication error between the main board and the display.
  • OF OF. Showroom demo mode. The lights and display work but nothing cools; press and hold the buttons your manual lists to turn demo mode off. That one needs no technician.

Other Samsung refrigerator repairs

  • Not cooling at all, compressor clicking. A failed inverter board or start component, or a compressor fault on the sealed system, which our EPA 608 Certified technician is qualified to work on.
  • Water dispenser dead or slow. A clogged filter, a frozen line in the door, or a failed inlet valve.
  • Water on the floor. A clogged defrost drain, a leaking fill line, or a cracked filter housing.
  • Display dead. A failed display board or main board, or a power fault at the board.
  • Loud buzzing or clicking. An iced fan blade, a failing fan motor or an ice maker motor trying to cycle.

Repair or replace a Samsung refrigerator?

On a Samsung under about 10 years old, ice maker, fan, defrost and sensor repairs are almost always worth doing, because a comparable new French door unit costs many times more. A compressor or sealed-system failure on an older model is the point where replacement deserves a serious look, and we tell you honestly which side of that line you are on. Typical ranges are in our refrigerator repair cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Samsung ice maker keep freezing up?

On most Samsung French door models the ice maker sits in the fresh-food door, so cold air has to be ducted to it. When moisture gets into that compartment through a worn seal, or a fan or heater in the ice room fails, frost builds until the ice maker jams. Defrosting it by hand is temporary; replacing the failed seal, fan or heater is the fix.

What does 22E mean on a Samsung refrigerator?

On most models 22E (or 22C) is a fresh-food fan error. The fan behind the fridge-section evaporator has iced over or failed, which is why the fridge warms up while the freezer keeps working. The underlying cause is usually a defrost fault that lets ice build on the coil.

My Samsung fridge display works but nothing is cold. Why?

If the display shows OF OF, the refrigerator is in showroom demo mode and is not running the compressor. Your manual lists the button combination to turn it off. If there is no OF OF and nothing cools, it needs a diagnosis.

Is it worth repairing a Samsung refrigerator?

Usually yes for ice maker, fan, defrost, sensor and board repairs on a unit under about 10 years old. Sealed-system repairs on older units deserve a repair-versus-replace conversation, and we will give you our honest view.
