Brands and range types we repair

Expert Repair Company repairs gas, electric, dual-fuel and induction ranges, wall ovens and cooktops throughout the Sacramento area, from a 20-year-old GE in Carmichael to a 48-inch Wolf in Roseville. Call (279) 225-1050; same-day appointments are often available on weekdays.

The everyday ranges in Citrus Heights, Orangevale and Fair Oaks are GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG, Kenmore, Maytag and Amana, and igniters, bake elements and control boards for those are usually on the van. Newer Roseville and Folsom kitchens bring a different tier: Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Bertazzoni, ZLINE, JennAir, KitchenAid, Bosch and Electrolux, including pro-style gas ranges, double wall ovens and induction cooktops. These need brand-specific parts and a technician who knows a Wolf dual-fuel oven’s relay board from its DSI module. That is the work we like.

Why is my oven not heating up?

If the oven will not heat but the burners work, a gas oven almost always has a weak igniter and an electric oven almost always has a failed bake element. Both are single-part repairs done in one visit.

The oven and the cooktop run on separate circuits inside the same range, which is why one can fail while the other works fine. On a gas oven, the igniter must draw enough current to open the safety valve. When it glows but never gets hot enough, the valve stays shut and the oven sits at room temperature. On an electric oven, the bake element burns open, sometimes with a visible blister or spark. Our article on an oven not heating up explains how to tell them apart from the kitchen floor.

Other range, cooktop and oven failures we fix

Beyond the igniter and bake element, the parts that fail on ranges are the temperature sensor, the electronic control board, the door lock, the surface burner switches and elements, the spark module, the convection fan and the door hinges.

Oven temperature is off, food burns or comes out raw. The oven temperature sensor has drifted or the control board is misreading it. A 25-degree error is enough to ruin a roast.

Oven takes forever to preheat. A weak igniter on gas models or a failing bake element on electric. Sometimes the broil element has also opened, since many ovens use both for preheat.

Oven will not turn on at all, display dead. A failed control board, a blown thermal fuse after a self-clean cycle, or a power problem at the outlet or breaker. Self-clean is the number one killer of thermal fuses and boards, and we tell customers to avoid it on older ranges.

Door locked after self-clean. A stuck door lock motor or switch. The oven will not run until it is released.

Gas burner clicks constantly or will not light. A wet or cracked spark electrode, a failed spark module, or a burner cap sitting off-center. Constant clicking after a boil-over usually dries out on its own within a day.

One burner on a glass cooktop stays cold. A failed radiant element, a burner switch or, on induction models, a failed inverter board. Cracked glass on a cooktop is replaceable on most brands.

Convection fan noisy or not spinning. A worn fan motor or a blade hitting the shroud.

Oven door will not close or seal. Broken hinges or a torn door gasket, both of which let heat escape and throw off the temperature.

Smell of gas around the range. Shut off the burner, open windows, and if the smell persists leave the house and call your gas utility. Once it is safe, call us. It is often a valve or a loose connection at the regulator.

Repair or replace a range?

Repair any range under 10 years old when the quote is less than half the cost of a comparable new unit, and repair pro-style ranges from Wolf, Viking, Thermador and Bertazzoni well past 15 years. Replace a builder-grade electric range past 12 to 15 years if the control board and elements are failing together.

Ranges last. An igniter, element, sensor or switch on a 12-year-old GE or Whirlpool is a modest repair on an appliance that has years left. The exception is a failed control board on an older budget model, where the board alone can approach half the cost of a new range. High-end ranges reverse that math entirely; a new relay board on a Wolf is a fraction of what the range cost, and the unit is built to outlast the kitchen. We quote the repair and tell you which side of the line you are on. Typical price ranges are in our dishwasher and oven repair cost guide.

The visit

  1. Call (279) 225-1050 or book online. Tell us gas or electric, range or wall oven, and what it is doing. If there is an error code on the display, read it to us.
  2. Diagnosis in your kitchen. The technician tests the igniter draw or element resistance, checks the sensor, verifies gas pressure and spark, and reads the control board’s fault memory where the brand supports it. Allow 20 to 40 minutes.
  3. Firm quote. Parts and labor in writing before any work begins. The $99 diagnostic is waived when you approve.
  4. Repair and calibration. The technician installs the part, runs the oven to temperature and verifies it with a thermometer, then leaves the kitchen clean.

Pricing

The diagnostic fee is $99 and is waived when you approve the repair. If you want the built-in microwave or dishwasher checked on the same visit, each additional appliance is $25.

Older kitchens, newer kitchens

Much of the housing in Citrus Heights, Carmichael, Fair Oaks and Orangevale dates from the 1970s, and some of those kitchens still run the original 30-inch slide-in on the original 240-volt circuit or the original gas flex line. Aluminum wiring, tired receptacles and undersized flex lines cause intermittent oven problems that look like a bad board. We check the supply before we condemn a part.

Roseville and Folsom kitchens built since the 1990s more often have double wall ovens, separate cooktops and pro-style ranges with stronger gas demand. Those installs bring their own issues, such as regulators set for the wrong fuel or convection ovens whose fans have never been cleaned.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my stove work but not my oven?

The burners and the oven are on separate circuits inside the range. A gas oven usually has a weak igniter that never opens the safety valve; an electric oven usually has a burned-open bake element. Both are single-part repairs. Less often the oven sensor, thermal fuse or control board is at fault.

Can you repair a glass-top stove?

Yes. Radiant elements, burner switches and the control board are all replaceable on glass-top ranges. Cracked glass can usually be replaced with a new cooktop panel from the manufacturer, though on older budget models the panel can cost close to half the price of a new range.

Do you repair Wolf, Viking and Thermador ranges?

Yes. Pro-style ranges and wall ovens from Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Bertazzoni and ZLINE are a regular part of our work in Roseville and Folsom. Common repairs include igniters, spark modules, DSI modules, relay boards, oven sensors and door hinges. Give us the model number when you call so we can source the part.

How long does an oven repair take?

An igniter, element, sensor or switch replacement is normally done in 30 to 60 minutes on the first visit. Control boards and brand-specific parts for pro-style ranges may need to be ordered, and we schedule the return as soon as the part arrives.

Is it safe to use the self-clean cycle?

It works, but on ranges more than a few years old it is the single most common cause of a blown thermal fuse or a cooked control board, because the oven runs near 900°F for hours. We recommend manual cleaning or a low-temperature steam clean on older ranges.

Why does my gas burner keep clicking?

Moisture on the spark electrode after a boil-over or a wash, a burner cap that is not seated, or a failing spark module. Let it dry overnight and reseat the cap. If the clicking continues or a burner will not light, the electrode or module needs replacing.

How much does oven repair cost in the Sacramento area?

The diagnostic is $99 and is waived when you approve the repair. Igniters and elements are at the low end of the range; control boards and pro-style range parts at the high end. You get a firm quote before work starts, and our cost guide lists typical national ranges by part. Call Expert Repair Company and get cooking again.
