Call (279) 225-1050 and tell us what the disposal is doing: humming, silent, leaking, or draining slow. Expert Repair Company repairs and replaces garbage disposals throughout the Sacramento area, and we’re upfront when a job is a plumbing issue beyond the disposal itself.
A disposal that hums without spinning almost always has a jam. Try the reset button on the bottom of the unit before calling anyone.
With the power off at the switch, look for the small red or black reset button on the underside of the disposal. Press it. If the disposal was jammed and has now cooled down, this alone can fix it. If it hums again after resetting, or the reset button won’t stay in, the jam is more serious or the motor itself has failed, and that’s a call for us.
Humming but not spinning. Usually a jam against the impeller blades, sometimes from a utensil, fruit pit, or fibrous food. We clear the jam and check that the motor isn’t overheating repeatedly, which points to a failing motor rather than a simple obstruction.
No power at all, dead silent. Check the reset button first, then the circuit breaker. If both are fine, the issue is likely internal, a burned-out motor or a failed switch, and the disposal usually needs replacement rather than repair.
Leaking from the bottom of the unit. This means the internal seal has failed and the disposal needs to be replaced. Garbage disposals aren’t designed to be opened and resealed; once the bottom seal goes, the unit is done.
Leaking from the top, where the disposal meets the sink flange. This is a repair, not a replacement. We reseal or replace the flange and mounting assembly.
Leaking where the dishwasher drain hose connects to the disposal. A loose clamp or a failed connection at that fitting. We reseat or replace the hose and clamp.
Slow draining sink with the disposal running. Often not the disposal at all, but a clogged drain line downstream. We check the disposal’s discharge and, if the problem is deeper in the plumbing, we’ll tell you plainly that it’s beyond what a disposal repair can fix.
Bad smell from the disposal. Usually trapped food debris rather than a mechanical problem. We can clean it out, but persistent odor after cleaning sometimes points to a slow drain issue worth having a plumber check.
New garbage disposal units are inexpensive compared to most appliances, which changes the math. A leaking bottom seal, a burned-out motor, or a unit past 8 to 10 years old is almost always more sensible to replace than repair. A jam, a bad flange seal, or a loose dishwasher hose connection is a straightforward repair worth doing on a unit of any age. We tell you honestly which category yours falls into before doing any work.
The diagnostic fee is $99, waived when you approve the repair or replacement. Checking a second appliance on the same visit, like the dishwasher that drains through the disposal, is $25 more.
You get a firm price before any work starts, whether that’s a repair or a full unit replacement. Decline it and you owe only the $99.
We repair and replace InSinkErator, Waste King and Moen garbage disposals, the three most common brands in Sacramento-area kitchens. InSinkErator is the unit we replace most often, and a same-visit replacement is often possible; tell us the model when you call.
We replace and repair garbage disposals, but plumbing beyond the disposal itself, such as a clogged main drain line, a failing P-trap, or venting issues, is a plumber’s job. If a visit turns up a problem downstream of the disposal, we’ll tell you directly rather than trying to fix something outside our scope.
One connection point worth knowing: when a new disposal is installed, the knockout plug for the dishwasher drain inlet has to be removed, or the dishwasher will back up and refuse to drain. Our article on dishwasher not draining covers this, and our dishwasher repair page covers dishwasher-side issues directly.
Expert Repair Company is based in Citrus Heights, CA and covers Roseville, Folsom, Orangevale, Fair Oaks, and Carmichael on regular routes, with Rancho Cordova, Antelope, North Highlands, Rocklin, and Sacramento also served. Older homes in Citrus Heights, Carmichael, Fair Oaks, and Orangevale often have original disposals well past 10 years old, usually a straightforward replacement.
Typical part-by-part prices are in our Sacramento dishwasher and oven repair cost guide. Disposal repairs and replacements are covered by a parts and labor warranty of up to 90 days, and the diagnostic is $85 when booked through this page. See the FAQ page for pricing and scheduling questions, or call (279) 225-1050.
You get the repair price before any part goes in. Say yes and the $99 disappears from the bill. Say no and $99 is all you owe. A second appliance checked on the same visit is $25. No travel fees anywhere in our service area. Book through the website and the diagnostic is $85. Every repair carries a parts and labor warranty up to 90 days.

With the power off, press the small reset button on the bottom of the unit. That fixes a simple jam. If it hums again after resetting, call us; the motor or a deeper jam likely needs attention.
A leak from the bottom of the unit means the internal seal has failed and the disposal needs replacement, not a DIY fix. A leak at the top flange or the dishwasher hose connection is repairable and worth having checked before you assume replacement is needed.
It depends on the unit's horsepower and brand; we quote the unit and the installation together. Our diagnostic visit is $99, waived when you approve the work, and we quote the full repair or replacement price firmly before starting.
Around 8 to 10 years is the general point where replacement makes more sense than repair, especially for motor or seal failures. Given how inexpensive new units are, we often recommend replacement over a costly repair even sooner.
Both. Common InSinkErator and Waste King models can often be replaced on the same visit as the diagnostic.
The disposal has a knockout plug for the dishwasher drain inlet that must be removed during installation. If it's left in place, the dishwasher can't drain into the disposal. See our article on dishwasher not draining for more detail.
Not usually. Slow draining with the disposal running is more often a clogged drain line downstream, which is a plumbing issue rather than a disposal problem. We'll check the disposal's discharge and tell you if it's beyond our scope. Expert Repair Company is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Every visit starts with an $99 diagnostic that is waived when you approve the repair.
