Call (279) 225-1050 and tell us what the ice looks like, or doesn’t look like. Expert Repair Company repairs ice makers built into refrigerators as well as standalone built-in and under-counter ice makers throughout the Sacramento area.

Why has my ice maker stopped making ice?

No ice at all usually means a frozen fill tube, a bad water inlet valve, or a failed ice maker module. Reduced ice, bad-tasting ice, or leaking almost always trace to the water supply, not the ice maker itself.

No ice, bin empty and staying empty. Check the freezer temperature first; it needs to run at 0°F or colder for the ice maker to cycle. Past that, the usual causes are a frozen fill tube (common after a door seal issue lets warm air in), a water inlet valve that has failed closed, or an ice maker module that has stopped sensing and cycling correctly.

Small, hollow, or oddly shaped cubes. Almost always a partial restriction in the water line or a weak inlet valve that isn’t delivering full water pressure to the mold each cycle. A clogged water filter causes this constantly.

Ice tastes or smells off. A dirty or overdue water filter, or in some cases mineral buildup inside the fill tube and ice maker assembly from Sacramento’s hard water. We flush and, when needed, descale the system.

Water leaking from the ice maker or pooling in the freezer. A cracked fill tube, a failed inlet valve that’s letting water trickle through when it shouldn’t, or a misaligned ice maker that’s overflowing the mold.

Ice maker completely frozen up, ice fused into one block. The fill tube froze solid, usually from a water pressure or valve problem upstream, or from the freezer running colder than normal.

Ice maker runs but never releases ice. The ejector motor or the ice maker module itself has failed. This part is often replaced as a single assembly rather than repaired piece by piece.

Built-in and under-counter ice makers

Standalone built-in ice makers, common from Sub-Zero, KitchenAid, Scotsman, U-Line, and GE Monogram, run their own compressor, drain pump, and water system separate from a refrigerator. We diagnose and repair the inlet valve, water pump, ejector motor, control board, and drain system on these, and we service the under-counter installations common in Roseville and Folsom wet bars.

Hard water and Sacramento ice makers

Sacramento-area water is hard enough that scale buildup inside ice maker water lines, fill tubes, and inlet valves is one of the most common causes of slow, small, or bad-tasting ice we see, right alongside filter neglect. Scale narrows the fill tube and coats the inlet valve, so the ice maker gets less water per cycle and cubes come out small or hollow.

Clearing scale from the fill tube and inlet valve is part of the repair when scale is the cause, and it is often cheaper than waiting for the inlet valve to fail outright.

What the visit costs

The diagnostic fee is $99, waived when you approve the repair. Checking a second appliance on the same visit, such as the refrigerator the ice maker sits in, is $25 more.

You get a firm price before any part is installed or any water line is touched. Decline the repair and you owe only the $99.

Brands we service

We repair ice makers across Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Bosch, KitchenAid, Maytag, Frigidaire, Electrolux, Kenmore, and Sub-Zero refrigerators, plus dedicated built-in units from Scotsman and U-Line. Samsung and LG French-door refrigerators with dual ice makers are some of our most frequent calls in Citrus Heights and Roseville.

How an ice maker repair visit works

  1. You call, we schedule. Describe what the ice looks like, or the lack of it, and whether it’s a fridge ice maker or a standalone built-in unit.
  2. Diagnosis on site. The technician checks freezer or unit temperature, water pressure and flow, the inlet valve, the fill tube, and the module itself.
  3. Firm quote before work starts. Approve it and the $99 diagnostic comes off the bill.
  4. Repair and verification. Inlet valves, fill tubes, and filters are commonly on the van. A test cycle confirms that ice is forming and releasing correctly.

Repair or replace an ice maker?

An inlet valve, fill tube, filter, or module replacement is worth doing on an ice maker of any age, since these are moderate repairs relative to replacing the whole refrigerator. A full ice maker failure on a refrigerator nearing 12 to 15 years old is a different call, and we’ll tell you honestly if the unit’s overall age makes replacement smarter. Standalone built-in ice makers from Sub-Zero, Scotsman, and U-Line are almost always worth repairing given their replacement cost.

Where we repair ice makers

Expert Repair Company is based in Citrus Heights, CA and regularly serves Roseville, Folsom, Orangevale, Fair Oaks, and Carmichael, with Rancho Cordova, Antelope, North Highlands, Rocklin, and Sacramento also served. Newer Roseville and Folsom homes account for most of the standalone built-in units, while fridge ice makers are common everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my ice maker not making ice but the freezer is cold?

The most common causes are a frozen or restricted fill tube, a failed water inlet valve, or an ice maker module that has stopped cycling. Freezer temperature above 0°F can also stop ice production even when the compartment feels cold enough.

Why are my ice cubes small or hollow?

This points to reduced water flow into the mold, usually from a clogged water filter, mineral scale in the fill tube, or a weak inlet valve. We check the filter first since it's the cheapest and most common fix.

My ice tastes bad. Is that the ice maker?

Usually not the ice maker itself. An old water filter or scale buildup inside the water lines is the typical cause, especially given Sacramento-area hard water. We can flush the line and recommend a filter change.

Do you repair built-in ice makers, not just refrigerator ones?

Yes. We service standalone built-in and under-counter ice makers from Sub-Zero, KitchenAid, Scotsman, U-Line, and GE Monogram, common in Roseville and Folsom wet bars.

Why is water leaking from under my refrigerator's ice maker?

A cracked fill tube, a failing inlet valve, or an ice maker overflowing its mold are the usual causes. Leaks can also come from a clogged drain, so we check the full water path.

How much does ice maker repair cost?

The diagnostic visit is $99, waived when you approve the repair. The repair itself is quoted firmly on site once we know which part has failed.

Can hard-water scale in an ice maker be cleared without replacing parts?

Often, yes. If scale is narrowing the fill tube or coating the inlet valve, clearing it is part of the repair and can prevent a valve replacement down the road. Expert Repair Company is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
