Quick answer: A dryer that tumbles but stays cold has usually blown its thermal fuse because lint is choking the vent; after that, the heating element (electric) or the igniter and gas valve coils (gas) are next. A dryer that will not start points to the door switch, start switch or motor. Expert Repair Company: $99 diagnostic, waived with repair, parts and labor warranty up to 90 days, (279) 225-1050.

Expert Repair Company repairs gas and electric dryers in homes, garages and laundry closets across the Sacramento area from our base in Citrus Heights, CA. Tell us the brand, whether it runs on gas or electricity, and what it is doing, and we will take it from there. Call (279) 225-1050, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Why is my dryer not heating?

Heat on a dryer comes from one circuit and tumbling comes from another, which is why a drum can spin for an hour and leave the clothes damp and cold. The fault sits in the heat circuit, and the part depends on the fuel.

Electric dryers. The heating element is a coil of resistance wire inside a metal housing at the back or bottom of the cabinet. When a section of the coil breaks, the circuit opens and no current flows. The thermal fuse, a one-time safety device, blows when the cabinet overheats and cuts the heat for good until it is replaced. The high-limit thermostat and the cycling thermostat sit in the same circuit and can fail open or stick.

Gas dryers. The igniter glows, the flame sensor confirms it, and the gas valve coils open to let gas reach the burner. A cracked igniter never glows. Weak coils let the igniter glow and then go dark with no flame. A failed flame sensor shuts the gas off a few seconds after it lights.

A blown thermal fuse is a symptom as much as a failure. It almost always means the vent is restricted, so the technician checks airflow before closing the job. Replace the fuse and leave the vent packed with lint, and the new fuse blows again.

Other dryer problems we repair

  • Will not start at all. A failed door switch, start switch or thermal fuse on the control side, or a drive motor that has burned out. On push-to-start models, a failed control board can also leave the panel dead.
  • Drum does not turn, motor hums. A snapped drive belt, a seized idler pulley or worn drum rollers. The squeal you heard for weeks was the warning.
  • Takes two or three cycles to dry. A restricted vent is the first suspect, then a failing cycling thermostat or a moisture sensor coated with fabric-softener residue that tells the dryer the load is dry too early.
  • Loud thumping, squealing or scraping. Flat spots on the drum rollers, worn drum glides on the front bulkhead, a dry idler pulley or a failed rear drum bearing.
  • Shuts off mid-cycle. An overheating motor, a weak thermal cutoff, or a door switch that loses contact as the drum shakes.
  • Burning smell. Lint packed around the heater or burner, a stuck cycling thermostat, or a blocked vent letting the cabinet overheat. Stop using the dryer, unplug it, and call.

Dryer error codes we see on Samsung, LG and Whirlpool

Most newer dryers tell you what they think is wrong. The code narrows the search, but it does not replace testing the part.

  • LG d80, d90, d95. The dryer has measured exhaust restriction of roughly 80, 90 or 95 percent. Clean the lint screen, check the vent hood outside, and pull the dryer forward to look for a crushed duct.
  • Samsung HE or HE1. A heating error: the dryer is not reaching temperature. On electric models this points to the element or thermal fuse; on gas models, to the igniter or valve coils.
  • Samsung tS or tO. A thermistor fault in the temperature sensing circuit.
  • Samsung dE or dC. The door switch is not reporting the door as closed.
  • Whirlpool and Maytag AF. An airflow warning on many models, usually a restricted vent.

Gas dryer safety

If you smell gas near the dryer, stop it, leave the gas valve alone if you are unsure where it is, and call PG&E or your gas utility first. On a gas dryer repair the technician shuts the gas off at the appliance valve, replaces the failed part, and checks the burner lights and holds a steady flame before the dryer goes back into use.

Should I repair my dryer or replace it?

Dryers are among the simplest machines in the house, and that makes them worth repairing longer than almost anything else in the laundry room. A thermal fuse, heating element, belt, idler pulley or igniter on a 10- to 14-year-old dryer usually costs a fraction of a new one, and the cabinet, drum and motor will often keep going for years. Replacement makes sense when the drum, motor and bearing all need work at once, or when a rusted drum is staining clothes. Our washer and dryer repair cost guide lists typical ranges by part.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my dryer keep blowing the thermal fuse?

Because the dryer is overheating, and the most common cause is a restricted vent. Lint in the duct, a crushed transition hose behind the dryer, or a stuck flap on the outside vent hood traps heat in the cabinet until the fuse opens. Replacing the fuse without clearing the airflow problem means it will blow again.

Is it safe to keep using a dryer that takes two cycles to dry?

It is a warning sign. Long drying times usually mean poor airflow, and poor airflow is how lint ends up hot enough to ignite. Clean the lint screen, check the outside vent flap opens while the dryer runs, and have the dryer looked at if it does not improve.

Do you repair gas dryers?

Yes. We replace igniters, gas valve coils, flame sensors, thermal fuses and thermostats on gas dryers, shut the gas off at the appliance valve while working, and check for clean ignition before leaving. If you smell gas, call your gas utility first.

How much does it cost to fix a dryer that will not heat?

The diagnostic is $99 and is waived when you approve the repair. Thermal fuses, thermostats and igniters sit at the low end of dryer repair costs; heating elements and gas valve coils a little higher. You get the price before any work starts.

Can you fix a dryer on the same day?

Same-day appointments are often available Monday through Friday. Call (279) 225-1050 and we will give you the first opening.
